A Night Before Our Stars

First, lets just clear things up and clarify the fact that I will not be considering this a "movie review" because more times than others, the movies that I watch are, to me, usually okay/good/decent/etc. As is TFIOS. I wanted to type up a post about this movie mostly because it made me feel things that other movies I've watched recently couldn't. And when I say "things" I mean "feels." I assume you would know what I'm talking about unless you've been living under a rock the past year or so. TFIOS was in no means an emotional roller coaster, but considering the fact that the movies I've watched in theaters have been about saving the world or surviving dystopias, this one is a bit of an outlier. I enjoyed this movie because it was thoughtful, and in turn made me feel thoughtful as well. Often times I get sucked up in "life" and school and other things that shouldn't matter, and I forget to stop and appreciate the relationships I have with those around me. Every now and then I always think about this and make note of showing more love and appreciation for my friends and family, but am always hesitant to take initiative. Anyways I feel like I'm rambling now so I'll just make a brief and unprofessional bullet point list about the movie just because I can...
  • "It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you" was used in the movie, which made me happy because it made me feel giddy inside when I read it in the book.
  • I enjoyed watching Ansel in this movie. I'm pretty sure this is only the second movie I've seen him in (the first being Divergent), so it was nice to see him with more lines and an obviously larger role. His lips are also quite lush.
  • I wasn't a fan of their "first kiss" scene. No spoilers!
  • This movie made me feel so much for the parents. Scenes just hit home whenever they include parents. Watch out for the scene with Hazel and her dad toward the end of the film.
  • I think they did a good job of making the story understandable for those who have not read the book in a long time (AKA me), or at all.
  • Although it was longer than I had expected it to be, the pacing was fine - nothing seemed too long or dragged out, or too abrupt or quick.
  • I enjoyed watching all the cute chemistry between Gus and Hazel and their relationship develop.
  • Generally, the pacing of their relationship development was also fine, as it didn't seem rushed (which I find happens a lot in movies).
  • The scene where Hazel is "not waiting for a call/text from Gus" (she totally is) - totally relatable.
